Born in Mato Grosso, Brazil, Sérgio J. Matos earned his product design degree from the Federal University of Campina Grande (Paraíba) in 2005. Based in Campina Grande in northeastern Brazil, he has built a practice rooted in the rich cultural traditions of the region, crafting furniture by hand with local artisans.
Matos is known for his whimsical, handcrafted furniture that blends Brazilian northeastern cultural heritage with contemporary design. His work celebrates regional craftsmanship and mestizo cultural traditions, transforming local techniques and materials into pieces that resonate on the international stage.
For IBTW, Matos has designed the Havaí Swivel Armchair and the Tecoara Armchair — pieces that embody his philosophy of honoring tradition through innovation. Each piece carries the warmth and character of Brazilian handcraft while meeting the standards of the global luxury outdoor market.
